Title Loans in Utah

In a Nutshell: Car Title Loans in Utah

Title loans are legal in Utah and are regulated under the Title Lending Registration Act (Utah Code Title 7, Chapter 24), overseen by the Utah Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). Title lenders must register with the department.

Utah sets no statutory rate cap. The Act requires lenders to follow the Utah Consumer Credit Code, which lets the parties agree the finance charge (§ 70C-2-101). That makes the written schedule of interest and fees — shown both in dollars and as an APR — the key document to read before you sign.

What Utah does limit is the loan itself: it cannot exceed your vehicle's fair market value, only one title loan may be open on a vehicle, and the lender must consider your ability to repay. If you default, repossession is the lender's only remedy.

What a Title Loan Costs in Utah

We do not publish a Utah cost table, and that is deliberate. Utah sets no maximum rate, so there is no legal ceiling to show — printing a representative APR would suggest a limit that does not exist.

What to use instead: the schedule of interest and fees the lender must post and review with you, stated both as dollar amounts and as an APR. Compare the total dollar cost, not just the monthly payment.

Consumer Protections in Utah

Utah title lenders must register with the Department of Financial Institutions. You can look up a lender on NMLS Consumer Access before you borrow.

Because Utah does not cap the price, its protections focus on the loan and on collection. The loan cannot exceed your vehicle's fair market value, only one title loan may be open on the vehicle, and it may be rolled over only at your request. If you default, the lender's only remedy is the vehicle: it may not pursue you personally, garnish your wages, seek a deficiency after sale, or have you criminally prosecuted. Complaints go to the Utah Department of Financial Institutions.

Borrowing Responsibly in Utah

Before you sign, be clear on the payment, the number of payments, and the total you will have paid when the schedule ends. The figures in your own agreement are the ones that count, not the examples on any website — ours included.

Other Options Worth Comparing

A title loan is one way to cover a shortfall, and it is worth putting it next to a few alternatives before you commit your car's title. A credit union small-dollar loan, a payment plan negotiated directly with the biller, a paycheck advance from your employer, or help from a local assistance programme will often cost less. If none of those work, borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem and pay it off as quickly as your budget allows.

Keep your vehicle in the picture too. The title is the security, so a loan you cannot repay puts the car you rely on at risk — and in most cases that car is worth considerably more than the loan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you feel confident about title loans.

Is there an interest rate cap on title loans in Utah?

No. Utah sets no statutory rate cap on title loans. Lenders must follow the Utah Consumer Credit Code, which lets the parties agree the finance charge (§ 70C-2-101), so your rate is the one in your loan agreement.

How much can I borrow on a title loan in Utah?

Utah law does not allow a title loan to exceed the fair market value of the vehicle securing it, and only one title loan may be open on a vehicle at a time. The lender must also consider your ability to repay.

Can my Utah title loan be rolled over?

Only if you ask for it. Under Utah Code § 7-24-202(3)(a) a lender may not roll over a title loan unless you request it, though the law sets no numeric limit on rollovers.

What happens if I cannot repay?

Repossession is the lender's only remedy. After the vehicle is repossessed and sold, the lender may not pursue you for any remaining balance, garnish your wages or seek criminal prosecution.

What must the lender show me before I sign?

A complete schedule of interest and fees, stated as dollar amounts and as an APR, which the lender must post and review with you orally. You also receive a written contract and a disclosure form.

How do I check that a lender is registered in Utah?

Look the lender up on NMLS Consumer Access. Utah title lenders register with the Department of Financial Institutions, which also handles complaints.
